Almost 100% of high-purity electrode materials are reclaimed from spent LIBs. LiPF 6 precipitates from electrolyte as NaPF 6 and is reclaimed via filtration. Recycling of spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) has aroused extensive attentions with the expanding demand of electric vehicles.
Recycling of spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) has aroused extensive attentions with the expanding demand of electric vehicles. Two considerable challenges of LIBs recycling were separating electrode materials from metallic foils and reclaiming hazardous electrolyte.
A green and efficient process to recycle spent LIBs at low cost is proposed. Organic solvent is substituted by aqueous solution to reclaim electrolyte/electrode. The minimum Al dissolved for cathode material stripping is calculated and validated. Almost 100% of high-purity electrode materials are reclaimed from spent LIBs.
The main components of spent Li-ion battery cells were cathode material, graphite, Cu foil and Al foil, which are the main economical spur for the battery recycling (Fig. 2). These components were separately recovered after the recycling process, and the electrode materials were completely peeled off from the electrode plates (Fig. 3).
Because of the complexity of LIBs structure and components, pretreatments, including battery discharging, cathode materials extracting and electrolyte disposing are often necessary to set the stage for pyrometallurgical or hydrometallurgical treatment .
The electrode is bonded to two acrylic substrates using liquid formula glue for one side and gel formula glue for the other. Compared with conventional peeling tests using double-sided tape, the major advantage of this new specimen is that it realizes conducting shear tests.
